The slot machine was innovated solely for gambling. In 1887, a man named Charles Fey created the very first of its kind in San Francisco. But probably the best advice anyone could take is to approach the slots with a money management plan. Decide on a fixed amount of playing money before gambling and stick to it. A very popular dictum, particularly in stepping into the casinos of Las Vegas, is to "push thy luck." It is also the foundation of undisciplined gaming. Experts advise the contrary: "take the money and run." Confining the play with a pre-determined amount entails earning what can only be earned, and losing what can only be lost. It also puts a proper perspective to hitting the jackpot as a remote result of enjoying the slots.

Today, the slot machines are the real lean, mean, money-making machines that generate about half of gambling houses' annual income.
